“Establishment of Herbal Gardens for promotion of medicinal plants through participation in educational institutions in District Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand”
2. Description of the Project:
This Central Sector Scheme project on conservation, preservation and sustainable use of medicinal plants funded by National Medicinal Plants Board, New Delhi was implemented in 25 schools in two blocks (Dunda and Chinyalisaur) of Uttarkashi District. The main achievements of the project are as follows:
A total of 500 sq. m. of wild gardens with 30-35 species of medicinal plants were established in the school premises of 25 selected schools.
Training programmes were organized in schools to educate teachers and students about identification of medicinal plants, medicinal qualities, plantation techniques, care and usage, conservation importance and sustainable usage, economic importance, usage in local health ailment treatment, livelihood generation etc.
For the promotion of medicinal plants, labels of the names of the plants, reading material, handbooks, posters etc. were provided and distributed.
All the medicinal gardens were maintained during the project period.
Schools were encouraged to cultivate the seed plants produced in the medicinal gardens in the local villages.
The maintenance of the garden was assigned to all the stakeholders with active participation of school students and parent-teacher associations/NGOs, involving students in watering, weeding, etc. during school hours, thereby enhancing the knowledge of students about the cultivation and uses of the species nurtured by them.
The garden will serve as an educational resource for botany, horticulture and traditional knowledge, while also promoting environmental awareness and engaging children with nature.

The project is operated in two blocks (Dunda and Chinyalisaur) of Uttarakashi district which are situated in hilly areas.

5. Nature of service provided by the applicant:
Under the project, the institution developed 25 government schools with green gardens. The scientists of the institute have created display grounds of various medicinal and aromatic plants within the school premises with the aim to educate students about plants, their uses and the importance of biodiversity and sustainable plants.

Five years

7. Other information related to the project:
On the basis of this successful project, the scientists of the institute also developed wild gardens in other school campuses, which were approved by the National Medicinal Plants Board, New Delhi.
