“Income Generation Programme for Rural Women Farmers through Commercial Production of Some Promising Medicinal and Aromatic Plants in Garhwal and Kumaon Regions of Uttarakhand”
2. Description of the Project:
National Mission for Himalayan Studies (NMHS) G.B. This project funded by the Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment, Kosi-Katarmal, Almora is implemented in 06 districts (Bageshwar, Pitthoragarh, Nainital, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Tehri) of Kumaon and Garhwal regions of Uttarakhand for income generation of 600 women farmers through production, processing, value addition and marketing of medicinal plants. The major achievements of the project are as follows-
The program has been successfully implemented in 06 selected districts namely Chamoli, Rudraprayag and Tehri from Garhwal region of Uttarakhand and Bageshwar, Nainital and Pitthoragarh from Kumaun region.
A major achievement of the project is that 244 farmers from 04 blocks and 15 villages in Kumaun region and 324 Farmers from 05 blocks and 11 villages in Garhwal region were included as project beneficiaries. 568 farmers from 09 blocks and 26 villages in both the regions (Garhwal and Kumaun) cultivated Kuth, Kutki, atis, Kapurkachri, sampanni and ajwain in an area of 22.4 hectare.
Out of total flower production area (11.78 hectare) in Garhwal region, total 6.56 hectare area in Tehri, 4.81 hectare in Chamoli and 0.41 hectare in Rudraprayag were brought under Kuth, Kutki, sampanni and ajwain cultivation. As a direct impact of the project, 456 farmers (68.67%; Total Farmers 664) started their income under the project.
Besides this, 349 Farmers from Garhwal region have started their income by selling the produce to the identified and supporting companies under the project. In this agreement, 8140 kilogram Ajwain (Villages:Sendul, Gangar, Hashiyara, Nauli, Bhelunta, Dalla, Jakhnyali, Stal, Darreth, Thurmar Village, Mandar,Sema, Semlath, Semya, Sunar Village and Sunirigad) worth Rs. 122100/-, 3056 kilogram Samparni (Dharpiyaoti and Sapandi Village) worth Rs. 611200/- and 4835 kilogram Kutki (Ghesh and Himani Village) worth Rs. 6769000/- were sold. In the case of Ghesh and Himani, the total income increased by only 10% due to the project, as most of the farmers were already cultivating Tuti in collaboration with various institutions.
In case of Kumaun region, 8.14 hectare in Bageshwar, 3.1 hectare in Pitthoragarh and 1.13 hectare in Nainital were brought under Kapurkachari, Kuth, Kutkti and Ajwayan out of total production area (12.37 hectare). In which 107 farmers have started their income by selling the produce to companies. In this regard, the schools of Bageshwar, Nainital and Pitthoragarh earned a total income of Rs. 16.22 lakh from the cultivation of Kapurkachri, Kuth, Kutki and Ajwain.
The direct contribution of the project was the training of schools as well as development of a market network for them. A total of 25 training programmes were organized for 776 schools for capacity building and skill development. 12 training programmes were organised for 384 practitioners in Garhwal region and 13 training programmes were organised for 392 practitioners in Kumaon region.
As per the project target, 83 Farmers of Kutki, 05 farmers of Kuth, 08 Farmers of Dandelion and 12 Farmers of Ajwain were registered with HRDI, Chamoli along with CAP, Dehradun. Whereas in Kumaon region 79 Farmers were registered under HRDI for Kuth, Kutki and Kapoorkachri.
For value addition, Herbal Tea and Herbal Masala mixture has been prepared and is being sold locally. TERI is also marketing the processed products under the brand name “Supi Sugandh” through online and offline marketing tools. TERI is promoting and expanding the project activities in the form of Sarvaari model in the form of cluster approach. In addition, TERI has established Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) with the help and support of NABARD to promote NMHS activities and cultivation of selected crops.
Various value added products have been developed by HUMAN in the project, such as, “Dandelion Herbal Tea”, “Oregano Herbal Tea”, Herbal Churna (kuth, Kutki, etc.) which are being sold in the local market as ‘H-SHG Products’.
Cultivation of Saffron and Ajwain in Ratnagiri district was linked with the MNREGA programme, which provided daily wages and benefits to the farmers for cultivation. Three illustration books have been developed for cultivation of Saffron, Ajwain and Production and Processing Technology. The project was prepared as a ‘Knowledge Product’.

The project was operated in 3 districts of Garhwal namely Chamoli, Rudraprayag and Tehri and 3 hill districts of Kumaon namely Bageshwar, Pitthoragarh and Nainital.

5. Nature of Service Provided by the Applicant:
The service provided by the applicant is primarily in the field of production of medicinal plants (Nectar Plants, Herbal. The objective of the project was to increase the income of women farmers through cultivation, processing and value addition and marketing. Apart from this, the project provided services in capacity building, skill development, interaction programmes and buyer-seller meetings among other proposed activities. ToTs (Transfer of Technology) were also facilitated through distribution of pamphlets, brochures etc. to the stakeholders.
