Timur plantation under CSR enhancing livelihood security in District Bageshwar, Uttarakhand
Where innovation meets performance
Wildlife menace is one of the prominent setbacks in hill agriculture of Uttarakhand. Most of the hilly
terrains where food crops have been grown once upon a time are abandoned due to monkey, pigs
and other porcupines. In this scenario, Jeewanti welfare and charitable trust, Dabur India Ltd. in
association with Human India (a society) came up with CSR support to the farmers of hill region.
More than 50000 saplings of Timur (Zanthoxylum armatum) were raised and distributed to cover 50-
acre land of 75 farmers in District Bageshwar, Uttarakhand. One of the progressive farmers, Mr.
Balwant Singh Karki planted 500 saplings of Timur in his land which was left barren due to Wildlife
menace. During the 4 th year of the project, Mr. Karki has sold about 150 Kg of Timur fruits and
earned 0.60 lakh at his farm. Per annum an income of Rs. 2.5 lakhs have been estimated after 5
years when all 500 plants will start yielding fruits. This is the story of one farmer; however, more
than 75 farmers have started receiving profitable income from Timur farming in the district. This
model can be replicated in rainfed agriculture of Uttarakhand hills where migration is at its peak and
the farmers are looking forward to receive optional crops to protect their fields from wildlife threat.
