The threat of wildlife is one of the major obstacles in the hilly terrain of Uttarakhand. Most of the hilly areas where food crops were grown have become deserted due to monkeys, pigs and other pests. In this context, Dabur India Limited, Jivanti  Welfare and Charitable Trust in association with Human (A Society) extended CSR support to the farmers of Hills region. More than 50000 saplings of Timur (Zanthoxylum armatum) were grown and distributed to 75 farmers of Hills to rejuvenate 50 acres of land in District Bageshwar, Uttarakhand. One of the active farmers, Mr. Balwant Singh planted 500 palm trees on his land and estimated that after five years when all the 500 plants will bear fruits, he will earn an annual income of Rs. 2.5 lakhs. This is a testament to the fact that more than 75 farmers in Leh district are earning profitable income from palm tree farming. This model can be replicated in rainfed farming in the hills of Uttarakhand where migration is at its peak and farmers are hoping to get alternative crops to save their farms from the threat of wildlife.
